On Athletes
A professional athlete is a professional athlete. He or she should not be taken to be anything more than this. An athlete with character and integrity is incidental to what he or she is. I think it commendable to see athletes with the utmost in character and integrity grace a given sport, but that is not why I, or anybody else for that matter, should watch them. I watch them strictly because they are good at throwing or hitting a ball, they can run like the dickens, they can shoot a puck at lightning speed, they exude almost inhuman hand/eye control, etc. They should not be viewed to see character and integrity. Please, for the love of God, stop complaining about athletes’ tacky behavior! Understand what they are and consider it mere happenstance if ever they possess any amount of character and integrity! If you want a good role model for your impressionable children, seek elsewhere! Find the “Mr. Rogers” of your neighborhood and have your young ones hang out with him! Of course I know you won’t do this because he can’t throw or catch a ball as well as the top athletes and as a result is pretty lame. So at this point it becomes clear you are not prioritizing your child’s character development, you are prioritizing his or her development of athletic skills. And there is nothing wrong with this. I am merely pointing out what is. Now it could be pointed out that athletes’ contracts presumably contain clauses regarding behavior, but this simply necessitates they not engage in bad behavior as opposed to stipulating they behave well. In other words, there exists a huge chasm between not behaving badly and behaving well! If it is character you seek, please, steer clear of athletes!
Many will likely be angry with this view. It will be claimed that there are plenty of athletes with exceptional character. It needs to be pointed out that I never claimed there were not! But like I said, this is incidental to why they are watched! If an athlete was not good at throwing or catching a ball or whatever else, would he still be watched? Of course not! He is watched only because he is a good athlete! His exceptional character is but a fringe benefit to his amazing athletic prowess!
If society claims it follows an athlete because of his first class character, would society still follow him if he was the same person minus his athletic ability? If society says it would not follow him, at this point it is clear athletic ability is the only reason said athlete is watched. Of course if he had no athletic talent he certainly would not be playing a professional sport and as such would not be in any position to be watched! If society says it would follow him even if he was not an athlete, then this suggests spectator sports to be obsolete. For if first class character was society’s only requirement for watching people, there would be no need to assemble in stadiums to watch athletes! We could much more easily and cheaply canvass our neighborhoods and hunt down people with first class character to “watch”. Of course this is absurd! My point once again is it is athleticism not character that attracts us! If one claims he follows the athletes with the most integrity, this does not mean he prioritizes character, rather he simply prioritizes athletes that happen to have the most character. Referencing other writings of mine regarding ideals, I feel compelled to point out that prioritizing athletes with the most character should not be taken to mean prioritizing character. If it was, one should be compelled to watch anybody with utmost character! I suspect we would find most of the first class characters out there to be overly dull and boring! So why would we watch them?
Is my view negative? I don’t think so. If one stakes his hope in athletes being first class characters, he will be let down frequently. This will inevitably lead to resentment, disappointment and complaining, of course in large part due to the ego asserting its self-righteous superiority. I see this as negative. Watching athletes for their abilities, and nothing more, I can turn the other cheek when they engage in tacky behavior. I see this as positive.

The relationship between coaches and athletes is very important and must be good if you want to achieve excellent results, which of course requires communication. Then it is left for the athletes to guess what is going on in their coaches head and what he wants from them.
Poor communication between coaches and athletes can lead to serious consequences. It may decide the outcome of the match, it can lead to an injury of the athletes, and if the athletes and coaches do not respect each other and have different ideas, it can mean that the athletes will not participate in some events, and finally it leads to a break up of co-operation. Trainers can be very active, can make lots of noises, scream, wave their hands, cheering on all the ways to help their athletes but are often better communicators who silently watch the competition, concentrating on every moment in order not to miss something that can be of crucial importance. Athletes are the ones who often look up to their coaches and they must not see any negative reaction, because it can lead to a drop in self confidence, and thus to poor results. Often during the competition athletes block out all other surrounding sounds, and all they hear is their coach, because in that moment he is the only person that they hear and who they believe in. Because the coach is the one who knows them, how they compete, their weaknesses, and their strong sides. Such confidence is not attained during one night and it is impossible without good communication.
However, it is not only important what the coach tells his athletes, but also the way that they interpret it. Meaning, how they hear all these instructions, how they accept them and finally react to them. The coaches words may be stimulating and encouraging, but if the athlete understood then wrongly, he could lose his confidence due to lack of results. It is therefore important to have a developed and good relationship, good communication between coaches and athletes so that these sort of situations would not happen. Of course, coaches do not communicate only with their athletes, today there is the growing problem of attacks on referees by the coaches, verbal or nonverbal, when they believe they are damaged by the judge. That is why new policies were introduced, for instance in soccer, where a judge can remove a coach from the bench and sent him to the stands. There are penalties for insulting the referee, as well as a ban keeping the team without a coach in a certain number of matches or a fine. One of the best examples is Sir Alex Feguson, certainly one of the biggest and the best coaches ever, who is often known to be in conflict with the judges and often insulting them, and was often punished. 5 Golf Tips On Driving Better Off The Tee
#1) Adjust your setup – Make sure you play the golf ball all the way forward in your stance so that it is directly in line with your left heel. Your stance should be slightly wider than shoulder width apart. You want to have a nice solid base which you can turn and coil around. Also, for the right handed golfer, you want to tilt your spine slightly to the right as this will allow you to swing and hit the golf ball on a slight upswing, launching it high into the air. This adjustment in your setup will also lead to more distance off the tee.
#2) Keep Your Lower Body Stable – When you are swinging, the job of the lower body is to act as a base around which your turn and coil your upper body. This allows you to wind up correctly and will create more power as you swing through the golf ball and release the golf club.
#3) Keep Your Shoulders Square At Impact – It is a very common swing fault to open your upper body too early in the downswing without giving your arms time to catch up. Everything needs to come together at impact, so making sure your shoulders stay square through the impact zone will allow you to be more in-sync and hit more solid and consistent golf shots. Having the shoulders open is even more common with the driver as it is a longer club so you need to allow yourself to be more aware of the timing of your arms and body working together. It’s a slightly longer swing, so you have to stay down and through your shot at impact just a split second longer than when hitting an iron.
#4) Make Sure The Hands Lead Ahead Slightly At Impact – You want to build up some lag or leverage in your golf swing because this will allow you to hit it farther and strike the golf ball more consistently. Make sure that you create some wrist angle or wrist set in your backswing and then maintain that angle in your wrists for as long as possible in the downswing. This will allow you to come into impact with your hands slightly ahead of the golf ball producing a much more solid golf shot. It is a common fault to release the golf club too early in the downswing where the clubhead gets to the golf ball before the hands do. Make sure to focus on creating a good angle with your wrists and hold that angle until the last second right as you are hitting the golf ball.
#5) Eliminate Excess Body Motion For More Consistency- It’s common with the driver to want to swing extra hard in order to try and hit the ball farther. One problem with swinging too hard is your body will probably move too much. Your head should stay relatively still during your golf swing even with your driver. You do not want too much lateral movement. If you shift your weight too much to the right on the backswing, you may be getting your weight outside your right foot. Make sure when you turn in the backswing, you turn so that your weight shifts to the inside of the right foot. On the downswing and follow through, make sure to stay balanced and behind the ball slightly, instead of feeling like you are moving forward too far.

Canada has almost 300 cricket clubs and includes a Ladies cricket association which started in 1994.
In the centre of Singapore you may be surprised to come across a very prominent cricket ground. In fact the famous cricket ground here sits in a very central place, nestled in amongst some extremely high skyscrapers. It has been able to retain that location due to the deep association the cricket club has with the city.
Towering 280 metres over the cricket ground is the UOB Plaza Tower, which was once the tallest skyscraper in the world outside North America when it was built in 1986. The club provided a training location for a French national junior team prior to European competitions in 2009.
Corfu Town in Corfu is a Greek town that owes its cricketing history to the British Garrison and the Royal Navy outposts that existed on the island in the early 1800′s.The British left the island in 1864 yet the seed of cricket had already started germinating and two cricket clubs remained with local players. In the early 1900′s cricket boomed on the island with an annual cricket festival attracting many visiting teams, particularly from naval ships in the British Fleet. After the Second World War Corfu’s reputation as a holiday island grew and many British teams included the island on their foreign tours, which took them to the island to enjoy its milder off-season weather. In return the local teams on Corfu also repaid visits by coming to England to play. Cricket is still very popular on Corfu with several teams contesting over 100 games every year. The original cricket ground in Corfu Town, which stills exists on the Esplanade opposite the Liston building, is rather small in size now due to new car parking requirements for the town. To make up for that a new, larger, ground has recently been opened at the Kontokali Marina further north along the coast. There are many foreigners who decided to settle on Corfu, but the cricket association will only allow non-nationals to play in its team once they have been resident on the island for more than four years.
